Integral calculus (general) Integrating powers Integrating is differentiating, backwards. First differentiating, which you already know.
x 4
differentiate
The small 4 on top is the exponent.
4
The exponent 4 comes to the front.
4
x
4
On top it gets 1 smaller: 3.
4
3
Now backwards: we integrate x 3 .
x 4 differentiate 4 x 3
x 3
integrate
Backwards: the exponent 3 grows by 1.
3
x
3
4
Divide by the new 4.

4
Then add + c.
+ c
Is that right? Let's check.
( 1 4 x 4 + c )′
Check: differentiate the result.
= 1 4 ·
The 4 comes to the front, on top it is 3.

x

4
3
The c drops out when differentiating.
The 4 cancels the quarter. x³ is left.
= x 3
Why + c? When we differentiated, the c dropped out. That happens to every fixed number.
Three functions, one derivative.
x 3 differentiate 3 x 2
+ 5
x 3 differentiate 3 x 2
x 3 differentiate 3 x 2
− 7
The number at the end drops out.
+ 5
− 7
Backwards: which number was it?
3 x 2 integrate x 3
So + c. c is a fixed number.
+ c
The result is called an antiderivative . Because of + c there are many of them, one for each number c .
The power rule A new example. ∫ x 5 d x means: integrate x 5 . The d x says: the variable is x .
∫ x 5 dx =
The exponent 5 grows by 1: 6.
5
x

You divide by the new exponent 6.

Add + c.
+ c
This works with every exponent. We write n for any exponent.
∫ x n dx =
The exponent n grows by 1: n + 1.
n
x
n
n+1
You divide by the new exponent n + 1.

n+1
Add + c.
+ c
This is the power rule :
∫ x n d x = n + 1 1 x n + 1 + c
Four examples, always the same pattern.

Remember: exponent up by 1, divide by the new exponent, + c at the end.
Your turn a) ∫ x 9 d x
Solution 10 1 x 10 + c
b) ∫ x 4 d x (Solution: 5 1 x 5 + c )
c) ∫ x d x (Solution: x = x 1 , so 2 1 x 2 + c )
A number in front: the constant multiple rule If there is a number in front of the power, it stays. It goes on top of the fraction.
∫ 5 x 3 dx =
The 5 in front goes on top of the fraction.
5
Exponent 3, one bigger: 4.
3
x
3
4
Divide by the new 4.
4
Add + c.
+ c
Often you can simplify the fraction afterwards:
integrate gives 3 x 2 3 3 x 3 + c = x 3 + c 6 x 2 6 x 2 + c = 3 x 2 + c 2 x 5 6 2 x 6 + c = 3 1 x 6 + c
A number on its own is that number times x 0 , because x 0 = 1 :
∫ 4 d x = ∫ 4 x 0 d x = 1 4 x 1 + c = 4 x + c
This is the constant multiple rule (k is a fixed number):
∫ k ⋅ f ( x ) d x = k ⋅ ∫ f ( x ) d x
Remember: the number in front stays and goes on top of the fraction.
Your turn a) ∫ 10 x 4 d x
Solution 5 10 x 5 + c = 2 x 5 + c
b) ∫ 12 x 5 d x (Solution: 6 12 x 6 + c = 2 x 6 + c )
c) ∫ 7 d x (Solution: 7 x + c )
Sums: the sum rule For a sum, you integrate each term on its own.
∫ ( x 2 + 6 x − 4 ) dx
Integrate each term on its own.
1 3 x 3
3 x 2
−4 x
Each would get its own c.
+ c₁
+ c₂
+ c₃
Three fixed numbers make one c.
= 1 3 x 3 + 3 x 2 − 4 x
+ c
The check: differentiating gives back the sum.
( 3 1 x 3 + 3 x 2 − 4 x + c ) ′ = x 2 + 6 x − 4 ✓
This is the sum rule :
∫ ( f ( x ) + g ( x ) ) d x = ∫ f ( x ) d x + ∫ g ( x ) d x
Three more sums, term by term:
integrate gives 4 x 3 + 2 x x 4 + x 2 + c 9 x 2 − 5 3 x 3 − 5 x + c 8 x 3 − 3 x 2 + 2 x − 7 2 x 4 − x 3 + x 2 − 7 x + c
Remember: integrate term by term, and write + c once at the end.
Your turn a) ∫ ( 6 x 2 + 4 x − 1 ) d x
Solution 2 x 3 + 2 x 2 − x + c
b) ∫ ( x 3 − 4 x + 2 ) d x (Solution: 4 1 x 4 − 2 x 2 + 2 x + c )
c) ∫ ( 5 x 4 + 3 x 2 − 6 ) d x (Solution: x 5 + x 3 − 6 x + c )
Integrating fractions and roots A fraction with x in the denominator is a power with a negative exponent: x 3 1 = x − 3 . Then the power rule works as usual.
∫ 1
x dx = ∫ x dx
x³ at the bottom means x to the −3.
3
−3

Exponent −3, one bigger: −2.
−3
x
−3
−2
Divide by −2.
1
−2
Add + c.
+ c
Simplified: − 2 1 x − 2 = − 2 1 x − 2 .
Check: ( − 2 1 x − 2 ) ′ = − 2 1 ⋅ ( − 2 ) x − 3 = x − 3 ✓
Be careful with negative exponents. One bigger means on the number line: one step to the right.
−4
−3

−3 + 1: one step to the right.
+1
−3 becomes −2, not −4.
A root is a power too. Its exponent is a fraction: x = x 2 1 .
The new exponent is 2 1 + 1 = 2 3 . Dividing by 2 3 means: times 3 2 .
∫ x 2 1 d x = 3 2 x 2 3 + c
For x − 2 1 in the table below: − 2 1 + 1 = 2 1 , one step to the right.
function as a power antiderivative x 2 1 x − 2 − x − 1 + c x 4 6 6 x − 4 − 2 x − 3 + c 3 x x 3 1 4 3 x 3 4 + c x 1 x − 2 1 2 x 2 1 + c
Remember: first write it as a power, then integrate as usual.
Your turn a) ∫ x 4 1 d x
Solution ∫ x − 4 d x = − 3 1 x − 3 + c
b) ∫ x 3 8 d x (Solution: ∫ 8 x − 3 d x = − 4 x − 2 + c )
c) ∫ x 5 d x (Solution: ∫ x 2 5 d x = 7 2 x 2 7 + c )
d) ∫ x 3 d x (Solution: ∫ 3 x − 2 1 d x = 6 x 2 1 + c )
Basic integrals: 1/x, e to the x, sin x, cos x There is one exponent the power rule cannot handle: − 1 .
∫ x −1 dx =
For x to the −1: −1 + 1 = 0.
−1
x
−1
0
Divide by 0? Not possible.
1
0
The table of derivatives helps here.
From differentiating you know: ( ln x ) ′ = x 1 , ( sin x ) ′ = cos x and ( cos x ) ′ = − sin x .
First ln : read backwards, ln is the antiderivative of x 1 .
∫ x 1 d x = ln ∣ x ∣ + c
The absolute value ∣ x ∣ is needed because ln exists only for positive numbers. x 1 also exists to the left of 0.
For sin x and cos x you read the circle of derivatives backwards.
sin x
cos x
−sin x
−cos x
Differentiating goes in a circle.
Backwards: cos x gives sin x.
And sin x gives −cos x.
The basic integrals , each with a check:
function antiderivative check x 1 ln ∣ x ∣ + c ( ln ∣ x ∣ ) ′ = x 1 e x e x + c ( e x ) ′ = e x cos x sin x + c ( sin x ) ′ = cos x sin x − cos x + c ( − cos x ) ′ = sin x
The constant multiple rule and the sum rule work here too:
integrate gives 2 sin x − 2 cos x + c x 3 3 ln ∣ x ∣ + c e x − 5 sin x e x + 5 cos x + c
Remember: you read x 1 , e x , sin x and cos x from the table of derivatives, backwards. The minus belongs to sin x .
Your turn a) ∫ 5 e x d x
Solution 5 e x + c
b) ∫ ( − 4 sin x ) d x (Solution: 4 cos x + c )
c) ∫ ( 6 cos x + x 2 ) d x (Solution: 6 sin x + 2 ln ∣ x ∣ + c )
d) ∫ ( x 3 + x 1 + sin x ) d x (Solution: 4 1 x 4 + ln ∣ x ∣ − cos x + c )
Inside ax + b: divide by a When you differentiate with the chain rule, the number from inside comes to the front. So when you integrate, you divide by it.
e 3x differentiate e 3x
Differentiate: the 3 comes to the front.
3
3
·
Integrate: divide by 3.
e 3x integrate
1 e 3x
3
3
Add + c.
+ c
Check: ( 3 1 e 3 x ) ′ = 3 1 ⋅ 3 e 3 x = e 3 x ✓
If there is also + b inside, nothing changes. The b drops out when you differentiate.
∫ cos ( 2 x + 1 ) d x = 2 1 sin ( 2 x + 1 ) + c
function number a antiderivative e 2 x 2 2 1 e 2 x + c e − x − 1 − e − x + c sin ( 3 x ) 3 − 3 1 cos ( 3 x ) + c ( 2 x + 1 ) 3 2 8 1 ( 2 x + 1 ) 4 + c
In the last row: outside the power rule, 4 1 ( 2 x + 1 ) 4 , then divide by 2 .
In general (F is an antiderivative of f ):
∫ f ( a x + b ) d x = a 1 F ( a x + b ) + c
Remember: integrate the outside as usual, then divide by a . The b does not matter.
This only works if a x + b is inside. For e x 2 the derivative of the inside is 2 x , not a fixed number. Then you cannot divide by 2 x .
Your turn a) ∫ e 4 x d x
Solution 4 1 e 4 x + c
b) ∫ sin ( 2 x − 3 ) d x (Solution: − 2 1 cos ( 2 x − 3 ) + c )
c) ∫ ( 3 x − 1 ) 4 d x (Solution: 3 1 ⋅ 5 1 ( 3 x − 1 ) 5 + c = 15 1 ( 3 x − 1 ) 5 + c )
d) ∫ 2 x + 5 1 d x (Solution: 2 1 ln ∣2 x + 5∣ + c )
Rewrite first, then integrate There is no separate rule for products. Integrating factor by factor is wrong: for ∫ x ⋅ x d x it would give 2 1 x 2 ⋅ 2 1 x 2 = 4 1 x 4 , but its derivative is x 3 , not x 2 . So rewrite first.
∫ x ( 3 x − 2 ) dx
First the product becomes a sum.
x
∫ ( 3 − 2 ) dx
The x goes to each term.
x
x
2
Now term by term.
∫ ( 3 x 2 − 2 x ) d x = x 3 − x 2 + c
For a fraction with a sum on top, each term gets the denominator:
∫ x x 2 + 1 d x = ∫ ( x + x 1 ) d x = 2 1 x 2 + ln ∣ x ∣ + c
integrate rewritten gives ( 2 x − 1 ) ( x + 3 ) 2 x 2 + 5 x − 3 3 2 x 3 + 2 5 x 2 − 3 x + c x x 3 + 2 x x 2 + 2 3 1 x 3 + 2 x + c x 2 4 x 2 − 1 4 − x − 2 4 x + x − 1 + c
Remember: multiply out products, split fractions, then term by term.
Your turn a) ∫ x ( x + 4 ) d x
Solution ∫ ( x 2 + 4 x ) d x = 3 1 x 3 + 2 x 2 + c
b) ∫ x 6 x 2 + 3 d x (Solution: ∫ ( 6 x + x 3 ) d x = 3 x 2 + 3 ln ∣ x ∣ + c )
c) ∫ x 2 x + 3 d x (Solution: ∫ ( 2 x 2 1 + 3 x − 2 1 ) d x = 3 4 x 2 3 + 6 x 2 1 + c )
Scheme: indefinite integral 1. Rewrite: multiply out, split fractions, write roots and fractions as powers. 2. Integrate term by term: power rule, basic integrals, for a x + b divide by a . A number in front stays. 3. Write + c once at the end. 4. Check: differentiate.
The definite integral: area under the graph How big is the area A under f ( x ) = 3 x 2 + 1 from x = 0 to x = 2 ? The top edge is curved. For a rectangle there is a formula: height times width. So we put in four rectangles, each 0.5 wide. Their heights are f ( 0 ) = 1 , f ( 0.5 ) = 1.75 , f ( 1 ) = 4 , f ( 1.5 ) = 7.75 and f ( 2 ) = 13 .
0.5
1
1.5
2
4
8
12
Lower sum: height on the left.
Orange: this is still missing.
Upper sum: height on the right.
Orange: this is too much.
The sum of the rectangles with the left height is called the lower sum U 4 , with the right height the upper sum O 4 (4 rectangles):
U 4 O 4 = 0.5 + 0.875 + 2 + 3.875 = 7.25 = 0.875 + 2 + 3.875 + 6.5 = 13.25
So 7.25 < A < 13.25 . With thinner rectangles the estimate gets better. A second example, f ( x ) = x 2 from 0 to 3, with 6, then 12, then 60 rectangles:

A ≈ 6.875
A ≈ 7.91
A ≈ 8.78
The sums 6.875 , 7.91 , 8.78 approach a number: 9. This number is called the definite integral , written ∫ 0 3 x 2 d x . 0 and 3 are the limits .
You do not have to calculate it with rectangles. The antiderivative F ( x ) = 3 1 x 3 gives it directly: insert the upper limit, insert the lower limit, subtract. That this always works is the fundamental theorem of calculus . Here you see it: the result is exactly 9.
∫ 3 0 x 2 dx = [ 1 3 x 3 ] 3 0
First insert the upper limit 3.
3
= 1 3 · 3
3
Minus: the lower limit 0.
0
− 1 3 · 3
0
Work it out: 9 − 0 = 9.
= 9 − 0 = 9
= ⅓ · 27 − ⅓ · 0
The area is 9 area units (AU). The first example works out too: ∫ 0 2 ( 3 x 2 + 1 ) d x = [ x 3 + x ] 0 2 = 10 , and 10 lies between 7.25 and 13.25.
Here you leave out the + c . It drops out when you subtract: ( F ( b ) + c ) − ( F ( a ) + c ) = F ( b ) − F ( a ) .
Scheme: definite integral In general the limits are called a (lower) and b (upper).
1. Find the antiderivative F . Notation: [ F ( x ) ] a b , the limits stand at the square bracket. 2. Insert the upper limit: F ( b ) . 3. Insert the lower limit: F ( a ) . 4. Subtract: F ( b ) − F ( a ) .
∫ a b f ( x ) d x = F ( b ) − F ( a )
Four examples:
i) ∫ 1 3 2 x d x = [ x 2 ] 1 3 = 9 − 1 = 8
ii) ∫ 0 2 3 x 2 d x = [ x 3 ] 0 2 = 8 − 0 = 8
iii) ∫ − 1 2 x 2 d x = [ 3 1 x 3 ] − 1 2 = 3 8 − ( − 3 1 ) = 3
iv) ∫ 0 3 ( − 2 x ) d x = [ − x 2 ] 0 3 = − 9 − 0 = − 9
In iii) the bracket matters: minus minus gives plus. In iv) the graph of − 2 x lies below the x-axis. Then the integral is negative. An area is never negative: it is the absolute value, here 9 AU.
Your turn a) ∫ 1 2 4 x 3 d x
Solution [ x 4 ] 1 2 = 16 − 1 = 15
b) ∫ 0 1 ( 6 x 2 + 2 ) d x (Solution: [ 2 x 3 + 2 x ] 0 1 = 4 − 0 = 4 )
c) ∫ 0 2 e x d x (Solution: [ e x ] 0 2 = e 2 − 1 ≈ 6.39 )
